...expect to dance with the prettiest girl in the room or not at all. He danced with Bingley's sisters, after all, who were not presumably prettier than Jane. I'm sure Darcy was used to being upstaged at social events by Bingley's affability, and I'm not sure prettiness was Darcy's ultimate goal in a dance partner. It only became a factor when he did not know what kind of mind and temper the young lady had; thus Lizzy's looks were not temptation enough to be stuck with a young lady whose temper might be like her mother's, for example, especially since she was not of the highest circles outside the Meryton community.
