One thing that worries me about Charlotte   Written by Graciela (5/25/2007 11:45 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, How well does Charlotte know Elizabeth?, penned by Line
Are you new?

wanting Eliz. to marry Darcy.

"Miss Bennet was the only creature who could suppose there might be any extenuating circumstances in the case, unknown to the society of Hertfordshire; her mild and steady candour always pleaded for allowances, and urged the possibility of mistakes -- but by everybody else Mr. Darcy was condemned as the worst of men."

I have read in P&P board many times that this means that Charlotte was one of the persons in Meryton who believed Wickham story. (Every body except Jane). That doesn´t trouble me. Charlotte could be thinking that D. had reasons to give the living to another person, who could be better suited. She could think, like Mr. Bennet in P&P2, that Darcy was just a rich man who did as he liked. But if she thought that D. was the worst of men, how she could inflict him in her friend?
