...as a kindness to give others (such as Charlotte, perhaps) a chance to dance, whereas Lydia and Kitty might--in their youthful exuberance--have been a little bit selfish (perish the thought).

Other than the Bingley sisters, I do not recall anyone in the community described as disliking Lizzy, nor do we see her being cruel to anyone (perhaps Mr. Collins excepted, but she is trying to discourage him from proposing). She is usually civil even to Darcy, and in such an arch manner that he misinterprets. If Lizzy can be pleasant to Darcy, I do not see her being unpopular with her community. In fact, other than Jane, Lizzy is probably the most eligible young lady in Meryton; only Charlotte can compete in rank, and she has not been overly sought after as she has grown older.
