in consequence of the missive, Darcy misunderstands Lizzy (chapters 30 to 33), penned by Robbin
....in my opinion, because, being a proponent of the subconscious attraction theory, I believe that Lizzy has SOME positive feelings towards Darcy which she is not consciously recognizing, and those feelings are manifesting themselves in part through what she says. I cannot imagine a writer more artfully depicting such mixed feelings than JA has with Lizzy in these scenes you describe.
Behavior matters at least as much as conscious thoughts, in terms of our understanding of someone's feelings.
As for Darcy, I'd say that his attempt to rationalize his bad behavior by statements to the effect that it is "how he is as a person" ring so true---that is one of the most common traps that people fall into in terms of psychological awareness--we tend to feel that the bad things we are are unavoidable, and that the good ones are totally chosen. ;)
