After all, he is some kind of master of ceremonies at the assemblies and if only from attending each and every one of them, he must be aware of most things that happen in the neighbourhood.

I believe he knows about Darcy slighting Lizzy at the Meryton assembly. If he does not know it from the Bennets, he must have overheard it himself at the assembly.

Though the idea that Charlotte may have something to do with his interference, it is not my personal belief that SL would get that idea from his daughter.
