Joking with Lizzy only   Written by Linda (5/18/2007 10:58 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps..., penned by Rose G
Are you new?

Remember, Mr Bennet's remark about being crossed in love is made only to Elizabeth, Jane is not present. Unless Elizabeth reports it to Jane, and I doubt that she would, it would certainly not be used to raise Jane's spirits.

Mr. Bennet treated the matter differently. "So, Lizzy," said he one day, "your sister is crossed in love, I find. I congratulate her. Next to being married, a girl likes to be crossed in love a little now and then. It is something to think of, and gives her a sort of distinction among her companions.

In P&P2, Jane is present when Mr B delivers this line and I think it is exceptionally cruel :-(
