in consequence of the missive, Spinsterhood not so bad?, penned by Robbin
What you don't mention here is that plenty of people are miserable in marriage, and a dishonest/cruel/irritating spouse is far more likely to create that misery than a good one. Marriage is not an automatic improvement on spinsterhood even taking into account Charlotte's situation, character, etc - indeed it decreases Charlotte's escape options if the situation becomes miserable given the legal status of women in marriage at the time. (In other words, if all of Charlotte's brothers become impossible to live with she could seek employment as a governess or a housekeeper or the like, while once she's married to Mr Collins she's stuck).
And I have taken Charlotte's situation, character, age and temper into account in stating this.
