Are you new?

I think JA meant "illiterate" in the sense of having no interest or familiarity with literature or other intellectual/cultural subjects, not someone who couldn't read or write at all. In that sense, I'm afraid our Mr. Collins probably *is* fairly illiterate, and will influence his children to be the same. :-(
