However I don't believe she would have another chance: "ending up an old maid wouldn't be so bad a prospect compared to this"

I just don't see why is this so bad living among nephews and nieces...How heavy a burden could she be? It is true I can't understand her situation and the society completely, but would it be so difficult as you describe it? JA didn't marry (maybe her brothers had more money, I can't recall)and I think this was a brave choice...
"opportunity for children", of course. But she would have to try hard to raise reasonable human beings with such a father...alone again...
"seeing how Charlotte tackles this marriage": this is my point! The advantages will be few compared to the hardships. IMO it is just not worthwhile to undergo this.

PS1: "I think one thing going for Charlotte is that she is not like Mrs. Bennet so I do not expect her to behave as she does." I don't understand the relevance of this point...

PS2: Lady De Bourgh was there in the first place but then I lost the message (newbie) and I must admit I forgot her. I was referring to her as a perfect neighbour to help Charlotte forget her loneliness.
