If it means a contrivance...   Written by Moni (5/14/2007 12:11 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, According to Johnson's dictionary..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

then scheme would imply that perhaps Charlotte was clearly shown up here as being "different" to Lizzy. (I thought it was strange when Charlotte didn't leave the room after the refused proposal, but stayed by the window to eavesdrop.) Possibly Lizzy had assumed they were in some agreement on tastes and values, until this "opportunity" showed itself.

Something that perhaps may have been operating in Charlotte could have been her father's liking for connections, such as Mr Collins forever talking about Lady Catherine DeBourgh. While these connections meant absolutely nothing to Lizzy, they would have to Charlotte, because IMHO, she is likened with her father on this issue. Any thoughts?

(IMO, Lizzy is surprised/puzzled because in Charlotte accepting Mr Collins and his own values, the gulf between their now obviously differing values was most obvious, where it may never have come up between the two friends before. It also means their particular friendship would have changed dynamics, so perhaps there is a bit of disappointment around that in the air for Lizzy?)
