in consequence of the missive, Why were the militia in Meryton?, penned by Jean B
When JA wrote P&P in the early C19th, England had known a period of war and insecurity; war with the American Colonies,
Meryton and the surrounding area does appear quiet and free of riot or civil unrest. JA intended to add a social dimension of the Meryton neighborhood by bringing in the militia. The officers had time to socialize; visiting the libraries, a tea party and whist at Mrs Phillips, dining with gentlemen like Bingley and Darcy, attending dances and the Netherfield Ball.
