It is impossible for me to be impartial --whether from reading the novel so many times over the years or from fundamental suspiciousness I cannot say, but Wickham's behavior is essentially that of chatting Lizzy up, and his declarations should be approached with the same caution that any young woman would be well advised to adopt when fed "a line" at a bar or party.
