... Greek tragedy? I doubt it is a specific reference to Shakespeare so much as JA's embodiment of a concept of "near miss" or "tragic flaw" that has run through literature for thousands of years. It is not surprising that Shakespeare used it too; but I do not see Darcy drawing a specific parallel--the language is not closely enough related.

(Since a story called Pride and Prejudice would likely involve the Greek concept of hubris, it would not surprise me that JA's thoughts might flow to the other major ingredient of Greek tragedy.)
