him clean I shoud imagine, Linda.

He would have to kneel down to adjust/check the fitting of the shoe or help a client putting on the shoes .

Note that most shoes in this era were made to the same pattern on a straight last, not as a separate right and left fitting, and only took on the shape of the wearer's feet after repeated wear.
