Darcy smile #3   Written by Carolyn (5/9/2007 12:18 p.m.)
Are you new?

And yours," he replied, with a smile, "is wilfully to misunderstand them." chapt 12

I thought it might be fun to compare how Elizabeth and Miss Bingley react to Mr. Darcy smiles.

For the first two smiles, Elizabeth becomes silent.

#1 Darcy only smiled; and the general pause which ensued made Elizabeth tremble lest her mother should be exposing herself again. She longed to speak, but could think of nothing to say. Chap 10

#2Mr. Darcy smiled; but Elizabeth thought she could perceive that he was rather offended, and therefore checked her laugh. Ch 11

For the second and third, Miss Bingley takes over the conversation.

#2Mr. Darcy smiled … Miss Bingley warmly resented the indignity he had received, in an expostulation with her brother for talking such nonsense. Ch 11

#3"Do let us have a little music," cried Miss Bingley, tired of a conversation in which she had no share. "Louisa, you will not mind my waking Mr. Hurst."Ch 12
