After all, love and poetry have been connected for a long, long time, and by many different people, not just by Shakespeare! I think Elizabeth is simply arguing against the commonly-held notion that writing or receiving a love poem would *increase* the love two people feel for each other. She seems to be saying that Jane's admirer put so much effort into writing his verses that it extinguished his love for her!
