Mr Bennet amusing himself   Written by Cheryl (5/7/2007 8:45 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Sketching Mr. Bennet's character, penned by Line
Are you new?

I find Mr Bennet to be both funny and exasperating, and the arrival of Mr Collins really highlights both aspects of his personality.

He receives a letter from Mr Collins "about a month ago ... and about a fortnight ago I answered it, for I thought it a case of some delicacy, and requiring early attention." (ch 13)

Funny. "Early attention" means waiting two weeks to answer it. And he expects to - and does - have fun laughing at the absurd Mr Collins, as do I.

But what exasperates me is this: Mr Bennet knows for a month that Mr Collins is coming at 4:00 that afternoon, but he doesn't tell anyone until breakfast that same morning. I would be livid if my husband told me on just a few hours notice, that I'd be having a houseguest for almost two weeks. Insupportable!

All too often, the price Mr Bennet's amusing himself comes at another's cost. There can be a real mean-spiritedness to it.
