I think that he is well aware that Caroline wants him to compare her with Elizabeth (as she obviously presumes she will look best!). This scene was lovely in PP3 as the way they were dressed showed the contrast between them so clearly,with Lizzy simply attired and with nonmanicured-looking hands and slightly tousled and natural-looking hair,but still vastly more attractive than supercilious Caroline.
