...that dancing "is a subject which always makes a lady energetic." So it is not completely surprising that he approaches her on that subject. I wonder if Darcy really (no pun intended--LOL) expected Lizzy to dance or whether he merely wanted to start conversing with her.

Another thought that occurred to me, and that perhaps JulieW could answer, is whether in a private home people might practice dance steps without a full complement of couples.

Had Darcy been suggesting something like that, Lizzy might have envisioned a situation like the "solo" moment pictured in the dance at Netherfield in P&P3 (where the other couples seem to have disappeared from Lizzy's awareness) and been a little perturbed.
