Are you new?

The way that I have always read that is that he was aware or conscious of his awareness or "attention" of Elizabeth; pretty much saying that he was still getting use to the idea that he was that aware of Elizabeth and her actions, so he, with out realizing it, closed his book to watch what she was doing.

I'm not sure if that is correct, but that is how I have always read it.
