What was the reel like in terms of status compared with other dances? Was there another better dance that might have shown he thought better of her?
Did Darcy really intend to upset Lizzy's sensibilities with this suggestion? Or was she just showing her lack of interest?
She had been thinking and wondering about her impression of his sort of distasteful fascination with her, or took it as such. Her sense of his "premeditated contempt" really shows, and then she is surprised by his gallantry.
Nice bit of confusion, or was Lizzy right that he had intended to upset her composure, and her intelligent comment prevented him from taking delight in that, I wonder.
