I think I've figured out why   Written by Donna H (5/6/2007 10:28 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Why tell a falsehood about not being a great reader?, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

I already think that, yes, Lizzy actually may be quite literate. Early on, we know that Mr. Bennet does not consider her as silly as her sisters and sees a "quickness" in her. We know Mr. Bennet has a library and spends considerable time in it. His special like for this particular daughter is already established. Would they not possibly share an affinity for reading? I guess it's just an impression I got.

As for Darcy already having this impression too, I must admit he possibly does not. I guess it's hard for me not to be swayed by future happenings in the book about which I already know! That said, could he not suspect an affinity for reading just from the fact that that's what she chose to do upon entering the room?
