On Sunday, after morning service, the separation, so agreeable to almost all, took place. (Chapter 12)
I was under the impression that Sunday traveling was a no, no yet Lizzy and Jane return home after morning service on Sunday. Was the short distance between Netherfield and Longbourn not considered traveling or is it a clue to how much Lizzy wants to leave Netherfield that she is willing to trek home on Sunday. I wondered also about Bingley’s declaration in Chapter 10:
“I do not know a more awful object than Darcy, on particular occasions, and in particular places; at his own house especially, and of a Sunday evening, when he has nothing to do.”
This is an odd idea to me; would not Darcy ensure there was entertainment in his home. This shows that it is not very clear to me what sort of restrictions were placed on activities on Sunday. Can anyone say what kind, if any, restrictions on employment and activity were common on Sundays? ;D
