This particular suitor really can't be a threat to Bingley anymore, since this happened back when Jane was 15, and she is now in her early 20s. I can only wonder if writing poetry to a girl was considered rather laughable among intelligent people at the time, perhaps because so much bad poetry had been written? ;-) I agree that Elizabeth is protective of Jane and Bingley's growing relationship!
