Questions about needlework   Written by Robbin (5/6/2007 12:53 a.m.)
Are you new?

Elizabeth took up some needlework... (Chapter 10)

In Chapter 10 Lizzy takes up some needlework and in Chapter 11 she sits in the opposite corner from Jane and Bingley “at work.” Is it needlework that Lizzy is doing in Chapter 11? Would needlework have been sent to Lizzy from Longbourn with her clothes in Chapter 7? Could the needlework Lizzy does at Netherfield be from their poor basket? Not to start cross-novel discussion, only an example—in MP Aunt Norris scolds Fanny “If you have no work of your own, I can supply you from the poor basket.” Neither Caroline nor Louisa seem the type of ladies who would think of the poor—is a poor basket something ladies were expected to do? Between card games and music, Caroline seems to spend her time flattering Darcy and disparaging Lizzy—she has not much time for anything else! Louisa, between card games and watching piquet plays with her bracelets and rings. Would Netherfield, despite the snootiness of its ladies have a poor basket? ;D
