I think Darcy is making   Written by Donna H (5/5/2007 9:32 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Compliment?, penned by Denise H
Are you new?

a bit of a "dig" at Lizzy, who had earlier said to CB "I am not a great reader". Despite Lizzy claiming such, I personally have already formed the impression that she is quite literate and that perhaps Darcy suspects this as well.

Earlier, when Lizzy entered the room, she was invited to play cards. She declined due to the high stakes involved but couldn't admit to such, of course. CB took her refusal as a snub of the card-playing group and stated, sarcastically I believe, that Lizzy hates cards, and is such a great reader that she likes nothing else. Lizzy, realizing CB means no compliment, denies this.

When Darcy later says that truly accomplished women improve their minds through extensive reading, he may be trying to niggle at Lizzy for *falsely* claiming she was not a great reader. Lizzy is confused... she's been caught in a bit of a misrepresentation of herself, one that came out of her lips just because she'd been riled by CB. But then again Darcy has just paid her a round-about compliment, too. She's confused as to how to feel about all this...
