Though I think there certainly is merit in what the others have said, I do like the way you put this, Maria. I believe she does generally prefer studying characters over reading (even if some of those characters aren't particularly pleasant), but I agree that the "economy of the novel" may have swayed her preference a bit more than usual! ;-)
