...she prefers reading over cards but conversation and the study of character it entails over reading.

At first, I should admit, I thought it was rather strange to give up her reading: that drew attention to her and her character and started a whole conversation. She is supposed to be fond of reading...How easily she closes her book!

But after reading the posts here I tend to believe it is for the economy of the novel: she must enter the conversation... especially because Darcy must examine her more closely...
