Are you new?

I think initially the Meryton assembly was eager (or at least willing) to be acquainted with Darcy; it took "half the evening" before they gave up on him. So whatever attentions they offered were not acceptable to him.

Can someone clarify what sorts of attentions he might have expected? In Chapter 6 William Lucas's conversation is clearly unwelcome, and Darcy is even "extremely surprised" when WL tries to get him to dance with Lizzy. Was WL's offer inappropriate from Darcy's perspective?
