Are you new?

I agree that Mr Bennet bears responsibility for educating Kitty and Catherine if he doesn't want them to be silly, especially since his wife appears incapable of doing so.

I'm not sure if "light-hearted banter" or "meanness" are the only options for his motives though. Mr Bennet appears quite cynical - I think exasperation combined with cynicism may also be an explanation of his comments.
