... I believe Mr. Bennet might today be considered "passive-agressive" with those comments. Passive-agressive people know what they are saying is or could be hurtful, but say it in the guise of a joke or a teasing, light-hearted manner. I meant that I'd LIKE to think Mr. Bennet is teasing and light-hearted but I, too, feel there is more to it than that.
