Focus on objects and movements in chapters 7 and 8   Written by Margaret S (5/3/2007 10:12 p.m.)
Are you new?

Chapter 7 contains the two sisters’ journey to Netherfiled in sub optimal conditions. The two journeys are quite opposite. Jane is cornered into her journey and arrives wet and cold. Elizabeth insists on hers despite demands that she not go and arrives dirty and hot.

Objects of interest here are the notes passed to and fro and Elizabeth’s’ dirty garments – dirty stockings and muddy petticoat. No mention of Jane’s appearance after the rain.

In chapter 8 we encounter another instance of books. Similarly to her father, Elizabeth uses books to distance herself from her company. However, she is caught by conversation about Pemberley (inside information on Darcy, really) and loses interest in the book. She pulls up a chair between Bingley and Louisa. I wonder at this choice of seating. It only tells me that she might have felt more comfortable sitting next to Bingley and avoided Darcy and Caroline.
