Even if it's true that Mr. Bennet said these things in a spirit of lighthearted teasing, he had to be aware that they were hurtful. In one such passage, we see that Kitty is "disconcerted" by her father's comments.
Mr. Bennet may fall back on the defense "I was only teasing," but that seems disingenuous to me. I think he is too intelligent not to realize that his comments are hurtful -- and he doesn't need a modern marriage and family counsellor to tell him so.
