that "in such days as these" when books were more readily available. Darcy being well educated would have an informed historical sense that would include awareness that the industrial revolution was making all sorts of goods, including published material, more easily accessible.

I can imagine his modern counterpart lamenting that people are now not better informed given our current access to instant & enormous information through the internet and other media.
