There were no iPods, CDs, LPs, radios or even grammaphones back in Regency times. The only way you could hear music was by actually physically going to a musician and listening to them play, or having them physically come to your house. In that case, having a family member who could play was an important asset to the family's pleasures.

The argument for speaking foreign languages or drawing is more doubtful, but musical skills were very important back then.
