I just realized that I always read this as Lizzy speaking of compliments to Jane, not herself - that Lizzy is not surprised that everybody finds Jane sweet and charming, whereas Jane herself doesn`t have such a high selfesteem, maybe regarding Lizzy as just as worthy of praise, and is surprised to be so singled out.
