I do not berate him for saying he thinks Kitty and Lydia are silly. They are being silly. IMHO, for him to be sensible to the fact is saying more for his parenting than pretending that they are not silly. I also believe that one can be clever and yet still be silly.

How do we know from the text that he has not try to improve them before with limited success? After all, they are teenagers. I recall some very similar conversations I've had when I was their age.
