A disappointing realization indeed   Written by Amy Elizabeth (5/3/2007 11:34 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Oh, dear, Mr Bennett, penned by Rose G
Are you new?

I know just how you feel, because I have noticed in the last two times I have begun P&P that Mr. Bennett is not half so witty and clever as he is just plain mean. The line that hit me both times is right in the first chapter:

"They have none of them much to recommend them," replied he; "they are all silly and ignorant, like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters."

I have always thought that Lizzy and her father had a special bond and understanding. It is still evident that she is his favorite, but he is really insulting her here as well. How can I like anyone who says that Lizzy does not have much to recommend her (and doesn't take it back like dear Darcy did)? Of all the things Lizzy may be, silly and ignorant are not in the list.
