...an assembly would have gathered together many, many more people than just the Bennet and Phillips clans - they are simply the ones we are told about. Would you really be willing to say that all, or most of the attendees were "silly and stupid"?

Also, many people seem to believe that Darcy had little or no social experience. I suspect the opposite was true - IMO a man of Darcy's position would have been deliberately trained to deal with social situations (including large groups of strangers), whether he enjoyed them or not. I'm not so sure about men, but I know that for upper-class girls, becoming a debutante at age 17 or 18 was among other things a crash course in dealing with different social situations.
