Now, what was a plain dish?   Written by Line (5/2/2007 10:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ragoos R Us...or, are they?, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

I have the opposite problem - I've always had some idea of what a ragout was, but had trouble picturing a "plain dish". It's so vague! Did it mean:

- any non-spicy stew?
- any non-French (i.e: English) main dish, perhaps containing meat?
- an individual plate where the main ingredients were kept separate, as in the meat, vegetable and starch of my childhood?

I'm puzzled!

P.S: I'm not so sure that Mr. Hurst actually did look so pretty in his clothes. At first meeting we are told that he "merely looked the gentleman" - faint praise, if you ask me! ;-)
