...that Mrs. Bennet's reaction to the cough was something that showed that she was genuinely upset by Mr. Bennet's (as some people see it) harmless teasing. Mrs. Bennet is silly, sure, but I don't see her snapping at her daughters for no reason when she isn't suffering from an attach of "nerves," and this attack is brought on deliberately by Mr. Bennet purely for his own amusement.

Some people have argued in the past that Mrs. Bennet was just playing along in a game that both she and Mr. Bennet enjoyed, but I think that even if Mr. Bennet's teasing doesn't have a bad effect on Mrs. Bennet, this little exchange suggests that it does have a bad effect on the atmosphere in the household.
