I can totally understand why he acted so reserved. He was among a crowd of people he did not know, who also were, for the majority, either incredibly silly --not to say stupid-- (Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, Kitty, Mrs. Phillips & co), or trying to "catch him", as Eaffie puts it.
