I just browsed this thread all the way through with great pleasure, it is just that sort of little touch that JA excelled at!

One detail I did notice as I browsed. The last clause of the quoted passage should read

"she sees them now very often standing in Clarke's library."

instead of

"she sees them now very often at Clarke's library."

I know from my own experience how easy it is to inadvertently alter or omit a word when quoting without benefit of cutting and pasting! ;)
