I have always supposed... Written by Lia (5/2/2007 6:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Kitty’s cough, penned by Margaret S

the cough has two purposes. One is to reinforce what a nitwit Mrs Bennet is (Kitty is, perhaps, intentionally coughing just to annoy her?) and the second is simply to introduce the character of Kitty. I see the cough as a literary device, with no deeper significance.
