Your posting can me a little understanding of both points of view. If someone could make that table or pole screen, I would agree with Bingley that she should be considered accomplished. If you can paint like that, why would you also need to sing, dance, or speak foreign languages well to receive the praise that is due? However, if a woman was only mediocre in "a smattering of French, a pianoforte on which to perform and a portfolio of their own drawings," then I can see Darcy's (or rahter his and Miss Bingley's) point that she needs "a thorough knowledge" of many things (Ch. 8). I know a smattering of Spanish, can play of few tunes on a piano, and can make drawings (though not very good ones), but I wouldn't consider myself accomplished because of that. I wonder if Darcy would consider the artist of that table accomplished or would she need to possess the other qualities too? |
