that quote did refer to music,but I think you can, if sufficiently flexible , apply it to all the " intellectual" pursuits Mary is so intent on studying and performing.

IMHO the reaons she did take this so-called "studious " route is becasue she saw an opportunity to "shine" in the intellectual stakes.

None of her prettier, proably livelier sisters are so openly "intellectual": she took this route becasue it was her opportunity to be noticed.
