Darcy's behavior is neither quiet or subdued but deliberately and audibly insulting. True, shyness & reserved are often mistaken for stand-offishness, but Darcy demonstrates neither. He is willfully scornful. The people of Meryton were probably shocked to find someone from whom they might rightfully expect noblesse oblige behave in such an inconsiderate and spiteful manner.
