Darcy could also have improved his popularity and done his social duty by playing cards or talking to the non-dancing old women, or in any other way engaged socially. I would not be very impressed by someone who turned up to a party I was throwing and was standoffish like Darcy was, even if said person refrained from insulting other guests.

I understood Maisy's question to be directed however at whether there was a strict rule of etiquette obliging Darcy to ask a young lady to dance if both were unengaged.
