One important correction to my message...   Written by Arnie Perlstein (4/30/2007 11:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I appreciate, penned by Felicia
Are you new?

...a friend has kindly pointed out to me that I overlooked the fact that Bingley points Darcy to look at Lizzy--so scratch that part of my argument, in which I claimed that we had a strong hint that Darcy had been sneaking looks at Lizzy and knew who and where she was before Bingley spoke to him. We do not have that--my bad for not being more careful.

However....while that takes away one leg of my overall argument, it does not take them all away. We have no way of knowing if Darcy's proximity to Lizzy when Bingley speaks to him is coincidental or not. I still think he has been eyeing her and is sitting near her for that reason, and I still think his reaction is in part out of embarrassment.

And...we are each left to our own devices to determine whether that glance that passes between Darcy and Lizzy is one charged with electricity or not--JA does not give us any stage directions to guide us, and that moment could plausibly be supercharged, or a big nothing. I prefer the supercharged theory, because it is so much more romantic. ;)
