He's reserved, not shy. When Austen wants to call a fellow shy she does...as in Benwick whom she describes as shy but not reserved. In Austen's writing, shy does not mean reserved, and reserved does not equal shy. Darcy does not excuse his bad behavior. I fail to see why others are so eager to acquit him.
